Dr. Janani Rangaswami is a nephrologist and professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She is a clinician-researcher with expertise in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) medicine and implementation science. She was the valedictorian of her medical school class from the Dr. MGR University, Chennai, India, and was awarded several gold medals of distinction across specialty areas. She completed her residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at Einstein-Jefferson Health, Philadelphia, and won awards for the best intern, graduating resident, and best trainee-researcher. She trained in nephrology at Weill Cornell Medicine, NY, where she developed a strong interest in the cardiovascular-kidney space, influenced by the rich history of interdisciplinary collaborations and pioneering scientific work done at that institution. Her scientific work spans cardiorenal physiology and mechanistic insights in kidney dysfunction in heart failure, use of guideline directed therapies in heart failure/CKM conditions, CKM education and training strategies, and implementation studies testing different approaches to optimize and scale CKM care delivery.
Dr. Rangaswami has served as the American Heart Associations’ Chair of the Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease (KCVD). Over her leadership tenure, she led several scientific statements and initiatives in the heart-kidney space, and served as the inaugural chair of the council’s science committee. She also served as vice-chair of the Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health presidential advisory (2023).
Dr. Rangaswami has authored numerous high impact publications in cardiovascular-kidney medicine and is the lead editor of two textbooks in this field: Textbook of Cardio-Nephrology and the Textbook of Kidney Disease in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. She has mentored several cardiologists and nephrologists in their careers and scientific growth. She is a frequent speaker in cardiology, nephrology, and endocrinology conferences globally
